A while ago I posted about emptying our pouf filled with scraps and going through the leftovers of four years of sewing (read post). While I threw out basically all of the synthetic fibre scraps, there was one fabric that I put aside.
Years ago, on a whim, I made my mum a Dress from a green polyester velvet for her brother's wedding. The pattern was the Ultimate Wrap Dress from Sew Over It with added pleating in the front.
After seeing a picture of my friend wearing a velvet scrunchie, I knew I had to save the green velvet from our purge to make Christmas presents. Having never made scrunchies before, I watched some videos and settled on the burrito method of construction to minimise visible seams that would distract from the beautiful fabric.
The scrunchies were a big hit this Christmas and everyone who received one (I did think about who would actually wear a scrunchie beforehand) seemed to be really happy. When I asked my neighbour if she was interested in a scrunchie, we started talking about different hair ties and for her version I used an additional scrap to tie a bow/scarf to the scrunchie.
Since I don't really use scrunchies myself, I didn't realise how popular they are but I'm glad they were well received presents. There are so many instructions online, with many different techniques. Also, if you want to get into hand sewing, this is a really manageable project. Try out this easy scrap busting project and make yourself or someone else happy in the process!
