After watching a video on We Grow Wild's Youtube channel where she made buttons, stitch markers and earrings from an olive wood log that had beautiful veined wood, I was inspired to finally use the piercing saw that I got from my parent's house, which I bought when I was a teenager. I find it extremely insightful, that in my late teens and young adult years, when I needed to decide on a career, I seemed to have forgotten or thought it irrelevant, that I used to be an extremely crafty child.
In primary and high school we learned how to use a sewing machine, to knit and basic woodworking. I always continued crafting at home during my free time and made coconut and beaded jewellery, knitted wrist warmers and sewed accessories. Some items that I specifically remember making are necklace pendants from shells and coconut shell.
Since we will be moving house in the near future, I have been thinking about decluttering. Personally, I am not a big fan of sentimental decorative items that don't have a practical use. For this reason I wanted to find a use for the shells we collected during our holiday in Sumbawa Indonesia. I decided to make stitch markers for knitting out of some of the smaller shells I had collected.
Once done, I immediately put them on the needles! This is a perfect way, to have a useable, beautiful and unique item. I handle and look at them regularly and cherish the memories linked to them.
Were you inspired you to make useable items from your memorabilia? I would love to hear if you were!
